3 ways to make outfits out of what you already own
Feeling pulled together when you’re bored and feel stuck in a style rut is challenging when you don’t have time to try multiple combinations in your closet.
Add in a changing body, or various lifestyles and boom it’s back to wearing the same thing over and over again.
These tips will help you develop your personal style and find creative ways to add visual interest to outfits without worrying so much about “does it match” or is it trying too hard.
Best of all, you’ll evolve as a human because you tried something new.
1. Mix Media
Ma’am, wtf is that?
When more than one material is used in a work of art.
Or, in fashion terms:
When two styles or fabrics that don’t “normally” go together are used in the same garment or from pieces in an outfit. This can be expressed in pairing items that are different types of styles in fashion (i.e. elegant & edgy) and/or with materials (lace & leather).
Examples of Mixed Media:
This hoodie and silk pants on that I styled for Gianna (right).
By pairing a sporty cotton top with a dressier silk bottom, we’ve created a juxtaposition or contrast, and thereby making the outfit more interesting and reflective of her personal style.
Mixed media can show up in a single garment, but it is easier to recreate by pairing two or more styles and/or textures of fabrics in your own outfit (like above).
It may sound complicated, but mixed media is undeniably one the simplest ways to add visual interest and chicness to your outfits.

2. Add a single accessory
As a private stylist one of the most common questions I get from clients is how to wear accessories, especially more than one. They know jewelry, headbands and other details can change an outfit, but it overwhelms them because they never know what looks good or is “enough” when it comes to putting together outfits.
Start with ONE accessory. Once you’re confidence builds, you can wear more.
Don’t stress layering or multiple styles or color-pairings. Whether a trendy or classic piece, it doesn’t matter the styling.
Wearing ONE accessory breaks up with basic and incorporates new styling without overcomplicating the rest of the outfit.

3. Combine different neutrals
We chatted working new neutrals into your wardrobe in my article Fashion Fundamentals: A Beginners Guide For Women Who Want To Improve Their Personal Style. Since we are often buying to the same core, neutral colors I am sure your wardrobe is bursting with them like buttons after Thanksgiving dinner.
Create cool, pulled together, chic looks by wearing those neutrals in a new way.
Mixing neutral colors together unexpectedly extends the life of your clothing investments while starving off style dull-drums.
Plus, if you want minimalist, simplified or professional outfits, expanding your horizons with new neutrals and combinations will keep you classic, yet far from basic.
New color combinations to try besides the outfits that naturally “match”:
Gray + navy
Taupe + black
Light gray + nude
Camel + burgundy
Navy + charcoal
Army green + white
Camel + chocolate brown
These are three of the simplest ways to get more creative while to wasting time figuring out what to wear.
